Who We Are

NanoArchitech manufactures, sells, and develops advanced nanoceramic building materials that replace high‑carbon, toxic cement with high performance climate‑resilient, fire‑ and waterproof composites for buildings and infrastructure. Our mission is to deliver long‑life, zero carbon building envelopes and exterior finishes that protect humanity and property from wildfires, floods, mold, toxins, and increasingly extreme climate events.

Jan Thoren, Founder

My story begins with a 25-year career in architecture, where I designed homes and
continuously deepened my knowledge across all aspects of the field. But my professional path has been profoundly shaped by personal experience.

As a child, I lost my home to a fire caused by an overheated motor during a freeze, an event that revealed how vulnerable our built environments can be. Years later, I was forced to leave another home due to toxic mold, and even more devastating, my daughter developed lymphoma—an illness we believe was linked to environmental exposure, likely mold-related.

These experiences transformed my perspective and gave my work a deeper purpose. Today, I am driven by a commitment to healthier, safer building materials and architectural practices, with the goal of helping others prepare for and prevent the growing risks associated with climate-related hazards, so fewer families have to endure the kinds of loss and health challenges mine has faced.

“The best way to reduce carbon is to not produce it in the first place!”

-Jan Thoren

“As an inventor, chemist, and Chief Technology Officer at NanoArchitech, I have devoted over 20 years of my career to developing advanced nanoceramic materials that fundamentally improve how we build in an era of escalating climate risk. Through decades of work in ceramic cement and high-performance composites, I recognize that the Ceramtek family of ceramic materials is technically robust, state-of-the-art, and environmentally meaningful.

Our nanoceramic systems are engineered for multi-hazard performance, delivering resistance to fire, flood, extreme weather, water, and wind, while enabling lower-carbon, climate-adaptive construction for homes and infrastructure. The same science that underpins disaster-resilient wall panels and housing systems has been proven in demanding field environments—from hurricane-exposed regions to critical infrastructure applications—reinforcing my confidence in both the durability and versatility of this technology.

From a chemist’s and inventor’s perspective, the formulations and curing behavior of these materials represent a significant advancement over conventional cementitious products, opening pathways to longer service life and safer, healthier buildings. The depth of research and development, third-party validation, and real-world deployments gives me full confidence to endorse this platform as a key solution for communities seeking resilient, net-zero-aligned construction in the face of the climate crisis.”

“As an MBA and chemical engineer, I have worked directly with NanoArchitech on projects utilizing their advanced Ceramtek materials, including ClimateSkyns and FireSkyns. I have also reviewed many years of third-party testing data and numerous patents supporting this technology’s performance.

Over that time, I have seen compelling evidence from housing and infrastructure applications demonstrating life-saving levels of resilience while also advancing environmental goals that exceed many leading low-carbon cement innovations. The Green Chemistry–based formulations behind Ceramtek use significantly less material and are engineered as an ultra-low-carbon alternative. Internal assessments indicate up to approximately 86 percent lower CO₂ impact in production compared with conventional cement. At the same time, durability testing and long-life design targets support a service life on the order of 100 years or more.

In my view, this combination of dramatically reduced embodied carbon and century-scale durability makes these products particularly well suited to the demands now being placed on next-generation construction materials.

ClimateSkyns and FireSkyns represent exactly the type of solutions jurisdictions are increasingly seeking to help prevent catastrophic loss of life and property in the face of escalating climate risks. As a chemical engineer, having personally evaluated the technical testing results and the depth of intellectual property behind this platform, I believe these Green Chemistry solutions provide the level of protection now required for the intensifying climate conditions we are experiencing globally. I fully endorse these products for resilient, climate-responsible construction.”

Lisa Farmen

MBA, Chemical Engineer

“As a California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) Bachelor of Architecture graduate and licensed contractor with hands-on experience in resilient construction and design, I have tested NanoArchitech’s Ceramtek nanoceramic materials extensively within my proprietary block system over the past seven years.

This composite consistently delivers compressive strengths exceeding 10,000 psi after only a one-hour ambient cure, allowing block casting and release in under an hour after pouring. In testing, it has outperformed conventional Portland cement blocks by approximately three times while using roughly 40 percent less mass—an important advantage for seismic zones and rapid modular assembly.

Fire resistance testing demonstrated zero ignition at temperatures up to 2,800°F for four hours, with no smoke generation. Exterior surface temperatures stabilized at under 200°F, enabling true non-combustible structural use without the need for additional intumescent coatings. Waterproofing performance has also proven exceptional, maintaining integrity due to the material’s high particle density.

In field deployments for disaster-relief prototypes, blocks constructed with Ceramtek withstood Category 4 hurricane-force impacts of approximately 120 mph with less than 5 percent deformation. Thermal bridging was also reduced by roughly 75 percent compared to conventional concrete, significantly lowering energy loads and supporting net-zero building envelopes.

Based on these results, the performance metrics strongly confirm Ceramtek’s advantages for high-hazard construction environments. I fully endorse the continued development and deployment of this technology and have supported the work through laboratory collaboration and testing facilities.”

“As a California firefighter, member of the Santa Clara Fire Council, and fire safety advisor, I have personally reviewed the Ceramtek FireSkyns fire-resistant building finishes, along with supporting testing data and successful projects previously completed by this team.

Their performance is exceptional—combining outstanding fire and heat resistance with a smokeless burn profile while maintaining a clean, attractive architectural finish. From a fire safety perspective, materials that provide this level of non-combustible protection while also integrating seamlessly into modern building design are extremely valuable.

In my view, Ceramtek represents a meaningful advancement in both fire safety and contemporary construction practices.”

Gregg Winovitch

Santa Clara Fire Council and Safety Advisor

My background is in Naval Engineering, firefighting, and over two decades as a building contractor. I’ve worked with a wide range of materials—but none have matched the performance and reliability of Ceramtek products.

For more than seven years, I’ve used Ceramtek in both interior renovations and exterior building envelope applications across numerous projects. The results speak for themselves: my clients continue to be impressed years later with the durability, water resistance, and mold prevention these materials provide. No legacy materials can match it.

Ceramtek materials have proven to be a true game-changer—combining superior protection, longevity, and clean aesthetics that set a higher standard in modern construction. The fast cure time, century long durability, using half as much material with a low to zero carbon footprint saves time, money, labor and gives our customers solutions with greater integrity for the same price.

We are proud to be doing the right thing for the environment and our own health as well as making healthy buildings that our customers appreciate. Ceramtek materials are useful in many ways in renovation projects. That’s why we call it the Magic Mud.
